Whatever happened to Mrs. Betty?
Well, we had the trial back in July. I’m sad to say that we weren’t victorious, in the way we’d hoped. The Mom presented on paper as if she’d gotten herself together, and the social workers believed it to be so. At the end of the trial, two people were crushed: Me and Mrs. Betty.
But. You know what? She said that everything happens for a reason. And she’s right.
At this stage in the game, the Mom has changed the child’s school and Mrs. Betty doesn’t see him often, if at all. When she does, it’s always from a distance. She worries about him a whole lot, but she still believes that one day they’ll come back around.
Another funny thing happened after the trial, too. Mrs. Betty would call to check on me. Yes, she would call to check on me. Go figure. See, Mrs. Betty is the quintessential “Grandma”. So, she had to be sure I wasn’t working too hard and taking proper vacations. She had to be sure I was eating okay. She had to make sure Chief was okay. She had to make sure I got paid.
One day after work when she called and I sounded particularly stressed, she told me that she was going to start helping out in the office on a volunteer basis. Yes. Told. I didn’t put up a fight, because I knew that’s what she was going to do, and because I knew that she wanted to get out of the house just as much as I probably did need the help. So, one day I got a couple files together and called her up to “ask” her to come help me. She was there at the speed of light, working on files, taking notes, and giving advice (to everyone). And, y’all. She’s goooooood and thorough.
Then, one day she told me she needed some business cards that said “Mrs. Betty, Personal Assistant.”
And now she has them.
And now she personally assists.
Surely, there will be more to come…..
